Become a little farmer on ancestral chinampas.

Music, private workshop "sowing with your hands

Pequeña chinampera
Verduras de la chinampa

Location

Xochimilco, Ciudad de México.

An adult for every 4 children

Enjoy a day with the little ones as an authentic chinampero (floating garden farmer), planting and harvesting traditional vegetables on these resilient floating islands, whose origin dates back more than 600 years.

Along the journey, which starts at a pier toward the chinampa, you will enjoy a full breakfast that includes artisanal tamales made with ingredients from the chinampa, appreciate local flora and fauna species of the Xochimilco Natural Protected Area, and learn about the history of the place through an explained musical timeline. This experience for the whole family is led by a play experimentation guide.

Upon descending from the trajinera (traditional boat), you will connect deeply with life on and around the chinampa, an agricultural system fundamental for food supply in pre-Hispanic times, and its legacy. You will sow these Mexica-origin lands with your own hands and harvest vegetables to take home.

Upon conclusion, the return to the pier is carried out by trajinera.
Program for children and adults. Available in English or Spanish, for private groups if the experience is requested at least two weeks in advance to confirm availability.

Important Information and Recommendations for the experience:

+ Chinampas: A pre-Hispanic agricultural system that consisted of building firm-ground islands in the middle of the water with mud, organic matter, and vegetation, where flowers and food are harvested.

+ Xochimilco Communal Land Natural Protected Area (Área Natural Protegida del Ejido de Xochimilco): Decreed by the Mexican government in 1992, it covers an approximate area of 2,657 hectares and protects a zone of chinampas, canals, lagoons, and hills, vital for aquifer recharge, climate regulation, and biodiversity conservation, including iconic species like the axolotl.

+ Clothing: It is recommended to wear comfortable clothing that is easy to clean if it gets dirty with soil, several layers of clothing because it is cold in the morning, and waterproof garments, water-resistant shoes or hiking boots, sunglasses, a cap or hat, and ecological or biodegradable sunscreen.

+ Transportation: For your transfer, it is recommended to travel by public transport, carpool, or hire transport or taxi companies that have electric or hybrid vehicles or carbon footprint offset programs.
